The progress of junior high school technology textbooks.

I had a chance to read textbooks.
When I went to the city office to do some procedures, I found a “textbook exhibition” being held.
This is a system that is held every year throughout Japan to contribute to the proper adoption of textbooks.
This year (2021), the exhibition is being held for an arbitrary 14 days from June 11 to July 31.

Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) – 2021 Textbook Exhibition Venue List

Having worked part-time as a tutor for a long time when I was a student, I spent about 30 minutes reading lightly and was very impressed by the progress of junior high school technology textbooks: !!!! I was very impressed by this.

In particular, the field of information systems had changed a lot.
Specifically, I felt that the following areas have made great progress.

Information security and information morality are well mentioned, which should be grasped.
While covering the basics of system development, the book uses actual examples so that even junior high school students can understand.
I would like to share my impressions of the book with you, so I will briefly introduce the contents of a junior high school technology textbook in the field of information.
If you are so inclined, I hope that you will visit the textbook exhibit and read the textbooks with your own eyes.

Technology textbooks that I have read
This is the “Technology 702/703 Technology Field Textbook” by Kyoikuhyo. Below is an introduction regarding this book.

Author’s status
I have been enrolled in an information science department since high school, and have received an education focused on information science.
As a student, I worked part-time as a tutor for about six years, mainly teaching junior high school students mathematics, science, and English.
Currently, he is working for a business system development company as a PG/SE.
He is interested in programming education, but is hesitant about it and has no knowledge about it.
Contents (Pay attention to the ★ mark!)
This section introduces the contents of the textbook.
The following is a summary of the contents of the textbook, without giving my impressions after reading it.
Please note that the chapters are not taken from the textbook, but are added independently in this article.

The chapters are not taken from the textbook, but are added by me in this article. They are long, so if you are busy, you can just pick up and read the parts marked with ★.

Chapter 1: Learning the Basics of Information Processing
Understanding how a computer works

This is the basic section. The purpose of this section is to learn about the information technology used in exchanging information with many people using information devices such as smartphones, tablets, and PCs. This is where I also studied in technology when I was in junior high school.

The difference between analog information and digital information, and how to express the amount of information Terms: analog information, digital information, binary number, digitization, bit, byte, bps
Method of digitizing still images and text Terminology: pixel, resolution, dpi, character code
Hardware Interface Description Terms: input device, central processing unit (CPU), output device, hardware, sensor, actuator
Understanding how information and communication works
[This book, p.196-197].

In this course, you will learn about the mechanisms of information communication such as the Internet, which has become an inseparable part of our daily lives.
The appendix includes information on packet communication, IP addresses, URLs, and email addresses.

Terms: information and communication network, Internet, LAN, communication protocol, TCP/IP

Understanding Information Security and Morality
[This book p.196-203].

The purpose of this course is to learn about security in information and communication, as well as the morals and various laws of those who use it.

Learn about information security technologies Terms: ID, password, firewall, encryption, information security technology, cyber security
Information Morality and Information Handling Terminology: Information Morality, Intellectual Property, Intellectual Property Rights, Portrait Rights, Privacy Rights
In particular, the information morale section clearly stated intellectual property rights, copyright and portrait rights, as well as self-defense against personal information (measures against identification, internet stalking, etc.) and the immediacy and authenticity of information (fake news).

Know the usage scenarios of information technology.
[This book p.204-205].

The purpose of this course is to learn about scenes of use in real life and future information technology as it develops.

As examples, the following technologies were introduced.

Development of artificial intelligence, automation of tasks
Payment with electronic money
Communication across language barriers with automatic translators
AI-based collision avoidance systems for cars
It was also particularly important to note that the future technology was clearly described as automated car driving technology.

Learn how to make a program
[This book p.208-219].

After learning how to turn on and off the PC, the brightness of the room, and the correct posture, we learned how to program using either Scratch, a visual programming language, or Nadeshiko, a Japanese input programming language.

Here, simple games and sample programs were introduced.
Chasing game
